How the Pelvic Floor Affects Your Quality of Life
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles stretching across the bottom of the pelvis like a hammock. This hammock holds up the pelvic organs, including the bowels, bladder, and sexual organs, and ensures that they’re operating correctly. While pelvic floor health can be a difficult conversation, it is important, no matter your gender.
The following conditions are all related to the pelvic floor–and can be experienced by anyone:
- Bladder incontinence, urgency, or hesitancy
- Bladder pain
- Constipation
- Bowel incontinence
That said, because pelvic floor health includes our sexual organs, some pelvic floor conditions will vary for men and women.
For women, pelvic pain is often associated with the menstrual cycle, including heavy periods and intense period pain. However, certain sexual concerns might also be related to the pelvic floor, including painful intercourse or anorgasmia.
For men, sex-specific pelvic floor conditions might include sexual concerns such as erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation. However, the prostate is also part of the pelvic floor, so prostate pain might be another potential symptom.
How Pelham Physical Medicine Diagnostic & Treatment Center Will Guide You to a Healthy Pelvic Floor
Physical therapy can provide a tremendous amount of relief to those suffering from conditions of the pelvic floor. There are a variety of exercises and treatments that the physical therapists at Pelham Physical Medicine Diagnostic & Treatment Center can employ to help you find relief, no matter how sensitive the matter is.
- Muscle training: A series of exercises to strengthen the overall pelvic floor. While some people might think only women benefit from pelvic floor muscle training, the truth is that men need to train up those muscles as well!
- Bladder training: Like muscle training, these exercises focus exclusively on the bladder.
- Electrical stimulation: A series of gentle electrical pulses designed to soothe painful muscle contractions in the pelvic floor.
- Internal and external massage: Don’t forget that the pelvic floor muscles are muscles like any other–and like the muscles in your back and shoulders, they also benefit from massage!
However, the most important thing the physical therapists at Pelham Physical Medicine Diagnostic & Treatment Center will do for you is provide a safe, private environment in which you can share your concerns, ask questions, and find relief.
What to Expect From Your Pelvic Floor Treatment
When you come in for your appointment, our physical therapists will start by reviewing your symptoms. Don’t be shy! Remember that they’re here to help (and they’ve probably heard it all already).
They’ll also work with you to develop a treatment plan. The good news is that, when caught early, many of these pelvic floor conditions can be treated easily. Major interventions such as surgery are rarely necessary unless a condition has gone untreated for too long–which is why it’s so important to reach out as soon as possible.

Recipe of the Month: Classic Pumpkin Pie
A holiday favorite made with simple pantry ingredients. Pumpkin brings fiber and vitamin A to the table, making this a seasonal treat worth savoring in moderation.
Ingredients
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
- 1 can (15 oz) pure pumpkin puree
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- 2 large eggs
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Fit the pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate and crimp the edges.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin puree, and brown sugar until smooth.
- Stir in the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Slowly whisk in the evaporated milk until fully combined.
- Pour the filling into the crust. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F.
- Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 40–45 minutes more, until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
- Cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before slicing. Serve as is or with a dollop of whipped cream, and refrigerate any leftovers.
A Seasonal Treat With a Nutritious Base
Pumpkin is a good source of fiber and vitamin A, and the eggs and milk add protein and calcium. Enjoy a slice with family and friends, and keep up your movement routine through the holidays.
Get a Head Start on New Year’s Resolutions
Who said you had to wait until January to make healthy changes? While December is a busy time of year, it also offers that glorious week between Christmas and New Year’s Day when work is slow (if not non-existent). Why not use that time to consider how you might incorporate new health routines in the new year?
You could…
- Incorporate a few minutes of jogging on your walks.
- Try out a fitness class you usually can’t take because of work.
- Perfect a few new healthy recipes.
- Experiment with meditation.
The post-holiday slump is also a great time to schedule an appointment with the team at Pelham Physical Medicine Diagnostic & Treatment Center. We can help you resolve any lingering pain or help you plan out a new exercise program—just in time for the new year.
